Transfer Credit Evaluation

University Transfer Credit Policy

General questions about your transfer credits may be answered by going to the following resources:

  • Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS). You may use the degree planning tool to understand how your transfer credit was used to satisfy certain ASC degree requirements.
  • How To Read Your Degree Audit Report
  • Transfer Credit Report. You may use this document to understand how your courses were evaluated.
  • Course Applicability System (CAS). provides information on courses, course equivalencies, and program requirements at a CAS institution to anyone who accesses a CAS web site. CAS provides information on how their specific coursework will transfer and apply towards a degree at a CAS insitution. This web site has infomration for student who are coming from a college/university in Ohio. There are other participating institutions and they are Arizona, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Washington. If you are out-of-state, CAS may not be the right place for you. The Transfer Credit Center may be able to assist you.
  • An appointment with an Arts and Sciences Academic Counselor. If you feel it important to review specifics of how your credit was applied, please call (614) 292-6961 to schedule an appointment to talk further about your questions/concerns.
    • Who determines how my credits will transfer and how do my transfer credits apply to my degree?

When a student applies and is accepted to The Ohio State University, his/her transfer credit is initially reviewed by the Transfer Credit Center, which is located in office of the University Registrar. Those courses that meet specific degree requirements are then applied to the student's degree program on the degree audit report (DARS).

Once the initial evaluation is complete, the student's transfer record is then sent to the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences advising unit, Undergraduate Student Academic Services, where advisors who have been trained specifically in the transfer credit process will do a further review of the transfer courses. During this review, they will determine if there is any other course work that can be applied to degree requirements. Once the Arts and Sciences academic counselors have completed their review and applied any further coursework they find acceptable to the degree program, a degree audit report is then mailed to the student. The degree audit report will help the student determine what coursework they still need to complete, and also help in constructing a schedule at orientation. It also gives the student an advance report of how their credits will apply to degree requirements at The Ohio State University.

      Explanation of Transfer Credit

Students often have questions about how their transfer credit was applied, and so we have provided some information regarding that process as well as what steps you can take if you have further questions or concerns about your transfer credit.

      Direct Equivalent

This means that the course you took at your transfer institution is a direct equivalent to a course here at The Ohio State University. For example, if a student took Social Science 104 at Columbus State Community College, it transfers directly as Geography 240 at Ohio State.

General Credit (Viewed as G000 on your Transfer Credit Report)

This course typically does not have a direct equivalent, but oftentimes is similar to courses that are offered at Ohio State. If this is a course that you would plan to use in a major or minor program, you must contact the specific department for that course for further evaluation. For example, if you are a history major and it is a history course that transferred as history G000, then you must contact the History department for further evaluation. The department will decide whether or not the courses may be applied to the major or minor program. For each course in question, you will need to provide as much information about the course as possible (i.e., course description, syllabus, course book, etc.) If you believe that this is a course that could be used to meet a GEC requirement, you should make an appointment to discuss this with your Arts and Sciences academic counselor, and again, it is important that you provide information regarding the course in question.

Special Credit (Viewed as S000 on your Transfer Credit Report)

This course typically does not have a direct equivalent and usually is significantly different from courses that are offered at Ohio State. If this is a course that you would plan to use in a major or minor program, you must contact the specific department for that course for further evaluation. For example, if you are Sociology major and it is a History course that transferred as Sociology S000, then you must contact the Sociology department for further evaluation. The department will decide whether or not the courses can be applied to the major or minor program.

Technical Credit (Viewed as T000 on your Transfer Credit Report)

This is coursework that has been evaluated as having technical content, and so is not equivalent to any course that is offered at Ohio State. Students are allowed to use 12 hours of technical credit towards the 191 hours minimum needed for the Bachelor's degree in ASC. If this is a course that you plan to use in a major or minor program, you must contact the specific department for that course for further evaluation. For example, if you are Biology major and it is a Biology course that transferred as Biology T000, then you must contact the Biology department for further evaluation. The department will decide whether or not the courses can be applied to the major or minor program.

Deferred Credit (Viewed as D000 on your Transfer Credit Report)

This is coursework that has not been granted credit, because the Admissions Office was unable to determine if the coursework was college level or if the coursework was taken at an accredited institution of higher education. In order for you to be granted credit for this coursework, you must contact the department that the credit has been assigned to. If, for example, your credit came over as math deferred credit, then the credit has been assigned to the Math department and you would need to contact the Math department for further evaluation. Only a department can make a determination to grant credit for deferred coursework.
