Welcome Transfer Students

Welcome to The Ohio State University! Students transferring to the University come with a unique set of needs, so that is why we felt it necessary and very important to provide you with a website that will address those needs and other questions you may have regarding the transfer process. Here are a few of the many topics you will find as you navigate this site:

Building a Relationship with your Academic Counselor(s)

Your first individual meeting with an Arts and Sciences academic counselor begins with the University Orientation program. During the scheduling session of orientation, you will interact with counselors who will assist you in constructing you first Ohio State academic course schedule. You will also learn what it means to earn a degree from Ohio State. Any future meetings with an academic counselor will be initiated by you. Of course, we recommend that you meet with your academic counselor on a regular basis in order to insure that you are completing the necessary degree requirements. If you are taking the online transfer survey 100 course, you will be required to schedule a meeting with your ASC academic counselor during your first quarter. During this first appointment, you should expect to have your academic counselor address the following topics with you:

  • Ohio State Scheduling Process
  • Second Quarter Schedule
  • 4-6 Quarter Projection
  • Short term and long term academic and career goals
  • Degree Plan
  • Submit your Transfer Survey 100 worksheet assignment (only if you are enrolled in the course)
  • To answer any questions you have in order to make your transition to Ohio State smooth and successful

Arts and Sciences General Academic Advising

The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences use a dual advising system; at minimum you will have two advisors assigned to you. Your assigned Arts and Sciences academic counselor is a full-time professional and generalist, who advises you on your degree plan, the General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirements, special academic and career opportunities, graduation requirements, university policies and procedure. Your Arts and Sciences academic counselor will also make referrals to campus support services when needed. ASC also offers unique specialized advising opportunities for certain student populations: The Diversity Services Office, Honors, Student Varsity Athletes, Pre-Education, Pre-Health, Pre-Law and Transfer and Re-Entry Students.

Departmental (Major) Advising

Your major departmental advisor is considered a "specialist" in your area of study. You should consult with this person on issues related specifically to your major. You are strongly encouraged to meet with your departmental advisor your very first quarter here.
