Middle Childhood Education
Students seeking an undergraduate degree at Ohio State who want to teach in a middle school classroom (grades 4-9) should plan to complete both a baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree. The undergraduate program will include appropriate course work in the subject areas the student intends to teach, along with some exposure to pedagogy and educational methods. The graduate degree provides teaching experience and additional work in professional education, and it is this degree that leads to Ohio teacher licensure.
The major in Interdisciplinary Middle Childhood Education is a Bachelor of Arts degree program, and is aimed toward students planning to pursue a graduate program leading to Ohio teacher licensure. Under current Ohio teacher licensure requirements, a middle childhood teacher must specialize in two of the following four subject-matter fields: reading and language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science. Course work for the major has been selected to meet the majority of state and national teacher licensure standards and requirements, as well as the requirements of the General Education Curriculum needed to complete the undergraduate degree. Indeed, the major goes well beyond the minimum state requirements and provides students with additional subject-matter courses that will broaden and deepen students’ understanding of subject areas and provide a solid foundation for their continuing professional development as middle childhood teachers. It should be noted that completion of the major does not guarantee admission into the Ohio State Master of Education program, and students will have the option to apply for licensure/master’s programs at other institutions, as well as Ohio State.
Students planning to complete the Interdisciplinary Middle Childhood Education major must submit an application for admission to the program. Applicants must have completed 45 graded hours at Ohio State, with at least 15 credit hours from either or both of their content concentration areas, and have at least a 2.7 cumulative point-hour ratio. For more information about the major and the specific requirements for each areas of concentration, visit the MCE web site.
Contact an academic counselor before applying to the program.
