Academic Opportunities

It is our strong belief, supported by the career experiences of students that involvement beyond the classroom contributes to an enriched undergraduate experience that translates into an enriched career and life experience. In general, these enrichment decisions relate to service and involvement, academic programs, and career goals.

Career decisions. Many of our programs have formal internships associated with them. These internships often mean the difference between an ordinary and an extraordinary beginning to a career. Other programs do not have formal internships, but students experience the same defining difference to the beginnings of their careers, and we provide very strong encouragement for students to complete internships as part of their career planning.

Service and Involvement Decisions

Throughout our lives, we make contributions to our communities and the causes we hold dear by volunteering our time. It is our hope that you will develop this habit early--and learn to manage your time effectively as part of this process—as a way to make your world a better place, and also to develop an understanding of the complex ways we all work together in our careers and in our lives.

One of Ohio State's strengths is the incredible diversity of extra-classroom opportunities available to students. We hope, in moderation, you will take advantage of this diversity to help yourself grow as an individual and to learn to manage your life and priorities more effectively.

Academic Program Decisions

Many of our undergraduates find their programs to be much stronger and enriched if they engage in research, in study abroad, and in other special academic opportunities. There are times when such academic program experiences are part of the credit required for a degree, but often these valuable activities will require you to measure their worth against your degree plan. Academic departmental homepages may be a good place to learn more about the availability of research experience. If you are interested in studying in another country you can visit the Office of International Education's study abroad web site.
