College of Mathematical & Physical Sciences Benchmarks

The college benchmarks below are provided to give you a general idea of the number of hours and types of courses expected to be completed each year in order maintain a four-year graduation plan for majors in the College of Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MPS). However, each major has special requirements and pre-requisites that can be accessed by downloading the MPS Special Major Requirements form. In addition to this, we have provided sample four-year degree plans for each major offered in MPS to assist you as you develop your graduation plan.

First Year – 45 Degree Hours

Astronomy & Physics

  • Complete Math 151, 152, & 153
  • Complete Physics 131, 132, & 133

Chemistry

  • Complete Math 151, 152, & 153
  • Complete Chemistry 121/H201, 122/H202, & 123/H203

Computer and Information Science (BS)

  • Complete Math 153
  • Complete CSE 201, 221, 222
  • Complete Physics 111/131, 112/113

Geological Science

  • Complete Math 151 & 152
  • Complete Chemistry 121/H201 & 122/H202
  • Complete Geology 121 & 122
  • Complete Physics 131

Mathematical & Actuarial Sciences

  • Complete Math 151, 152, & 153

All majors should have completed:

  • Complete English 110
  • Complete one or two general education courses in the Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities
  • Advising conferences – have met with your Arts and Sciences academic counselor & Major advisers at least once

Second Year – 90 Degree Hours

Astronomy & Physics

  • Complete Math 254
  • Complete Physics 261, 262, & 263
  • Complete Astronomy 291 (majors only)
  • Complete the general education second writing course & 2 Social Sciences OR Arts & Humanities

Chemistry

  • Complete Math 254 & 255 (BS)
  • Complete Chemistry 221 & 251-255
  • Complete Physics 131,132, & 133

Computer and Information Science (BS)

  • Complete Math 254 & 366
  • Complete CSE 459.XX, 321, 360, & 670
  • Complete 5 or 6 general education courses

Geological Science

  • Complete Geology 221, 223, & 550
  • Complete Physics 132
  • Complete the general education second writing course & 3 Social Sciences OR Arts & Humanities

Mathematical & Actuarial Sciences

  • Complete Math 254 & begin advanced mathematics courses
  • Complete the general education second writing course & 3 Social Sciences OR Arts & Humanities

All majors should have completed:

  • Advising conferences – have met with your Arts and Sciences academic counselor & Major advisers at least once

Third Year – 135 Degree Hours

Astronomy & Physics – see your major adviser

Chemistry – see your major adviser

Computer and Information Science (BS)

  • Complete CSE 541, 560, 625, 660, 675.02, & 680
  • Complete Statistics 427 & 428
  • Complete CSE Technical Elective
  • Complete 6 or 7 general education courses

Geological Science – see your major adviser

Mathematical & Actuarial Sciences – see your major adviser

All majors should have completed:

  • Advising conferences – have met with your Arts and Sciences academic counselor & Major advisers at least once

Fourth Year – 191 (minimum degree hours)

  • Complete remaining hours of Arts & Humanities/Social Science general education requirements
  • Complete Major/minor
  • Be certain you have completed the 597 senior capstone course (for BA only)
  • Check for completion of all required degree hours (minimum of 191, will vary with each student)
  • Make sure you have at least 60 Upper Division hours (300 level and above)
  • Apply for graduation (with your Arts and Sciences academic counselor), 1 quarter prior to the quarter you anticipate to graduate. Preparing to Graduate.
