Colleges of the Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary Programs

International Studies

The goals listed below for progress in the international Studies major are provided to give you a general idea of the number of hours and types of courses expected to be completed each year in order to maintain a four-year graduation plan. Each specialized track (for example, International Studies: International Relations & Diplomacy) has special requirements and prerequisites, which can be found on the department website: http://psweb.sbs.ohio-state.edu/International/

Middle Childhood Education

The major in Interdisciplinary Middle Childhood Education leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree and is aimed toward students planning to pursue a graduate program leading to Ohio licensure. Under current Ohio licensure requirements, a Middle Childhood teacher must specialize in two of four subject-matter fields: reading and language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science. The major is designed to provide students preparation in two of these four areas, in addition to providing the opportunity to experience, learn, and reflect on effective pedagogy. Course work for the major has been selected to meet state and national standards, most of the licensure requirements, and the requirements of the General Education Curriculum needed to complete the degree, as well as to provide as much depth as possible in each of the content areas. Indeed, the major goes well beyond the minimum state requirements and provides students with additional subject-matter courses that will broaden and deepen students’ understanding of subject areas and provide a solid foundation for their continuing professional development as Middle Childhood teachers. It should be noted that completion of the major does not guarantee admission into the OSU Master of Education program, and students will have the option to apply for licensure/masters programs at other institutions, as well as Ohio State. Personalized Studies Program

The Personalized Study Program (PSP) is intended for undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major that falls outside an established academic department or program. The PSP is open to any student in the Arts and Sciences once the proposed program has been approved by a faculty adviser and the Arts and Sciences college office. The PSP permits intellectually coherent majors designed by the student, assisted by faculty.
