Academic Advising
The business of constructing your graduation plan should involve an ongoing dialogue with an Arts and Sciences academic counselor and a major advisor in your department. The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences work on a dual advising system; at minimum, you will have two advisors assigned to you. Your assigned Arts and Sciences academic counselor, is a full-time professional and generalist, who advises you on:
- Your degree plan
- The General Education Curriculum (GEC)
- Special academic and career opportunities
- Graduation requirements
- University policies and procedures
- Referrals to campus support services
The Arts and Sciences advising office also offers unique specialized advising opportunities, where advisors work with certain student populations. Such affiliations include The Diversity Services Office, Honors, Student Varsity Athletes, Pre-Education, Pre-Health, Pre-Law, and Transfer and Re-Entry Students.
To schedule an appointment with an Arts and Sciences academic counselor. Please call the following number (614) 292-6961 or e-mail an Arts and Sciences academic counselor for questions that may not require an appointment.
Your departmental advisor is considered a “specialist” in your area of study. You should consult this person on issues related specifically to your major. Here are some questions you might find helpful when meeting with your department advisor:
- Are there any prerequisites and/or admission requirements to this major? If so, what are they?
- What are the first major courses you suggest I begin with?
- Upon completion of these courses are there particular points in your program when other major courses are required?
- Are there times during my academic career when your department expects to see me for consultation about my progress?
Degree Enhancing Opportunities
Study Abroad – Many of our undergraduates find their programs to be much stronger and enriched if they engage in study abroad. There are times when such academic program experiences are part of the credit required for a degree, or these opportunities are chosen out of pure interest.
Internship Advising and Job Search Services - Internships are available for college credit towards your degree program. Internships are an opportunity for you to check out a particular career of interest. Internship experiences also make you more competitive in the job market place, as employers are seeking a breadth of experiences beyond the classroom
